Powered by a 577bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, the Mercedes-AMG GT R is billed as Mercedes-AMG’s most advanced road car. The latest iteration of the AMG GT was revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and knocked the folks out with its power gain and weight loss.
With the new Mercedes-AMG GT R, the automaker has reached the next level of driving performance. This road-going sports car with motor-racing genes and innovative technical solutions offers an ultimate driving experience. Its development was largely based on vast motor-racing experience in AMG GT S customer sport and the German Touring Car Masters. However, the new AMG GT iteration is 90 kg lighter than the AMG GT S, and more powerful too, producing 577 hp and 699 Nm of torque from the turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 motor. Power is delivered via the same 7-speed dual-clutch transmission but has been altered for the GT R version. The first gear has a longer ratio while the seventh gear is shorter to give it better acceleration. The AMG GT R accelerates from 0-100 kph in 3.6 seconds and hits a top speed of 318 kph.
The AMG GT R is painted in an exclusive AMG Green Hell Mango body hue. The exterior stands out also with the help of with the front AMG Panamericana grille, while the underbody has been redone to offer better aerodynamics. Among other new features are a carbon fibre roof and new air intakes at the front and rear (both housed in a carbon fibre bumper) and a new lighter exhaust system. The AMG peformance seats adorned with Nappa leather, with optional yellow seatbelt dominate the interior while a piano black trim and the instrument cluster with yellow highlights finish the look.
Mercedes has added 19 inch and 20 inch wheels at the front and rear respectively are dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. The rear wheels turn 1.5 degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheel up to speeds of 100 kmph, thus shortening the wheelbase, while above that speed they point at the same direction as the front.
The Mercedes AMG GT-R will be available for purchase staring November 2016 while the launch for the European market will begin in March 2017.
