Scotch malt whisky distillery Ardbeg has released a new whisky An Oa, which is inspired by the most untamed part of The Ultimate Islay Malt’s remote Scottish island home: the Mull of Oa. This new creation reveals an aroma with contrasting smoky, sweet and singularly rounded notes.
Ardbeg An Oa is singularly rounded, due in no small part to time spent in the newly established bespoke oak Gathering Vat where whiskies from several cask types – including; sweet Pedro Ximenez; spicy virgin charred oak; and intense ex-bourbon casks, amongst others – familiarise themselves with each other. Pronounced “an oh”, this single malt pays tribute to the towering cliffs that shelter the Distillery from raging Atlantic storms.
Ardbeg An Oa’s subtly smoky aromas contrast with notes of creamy toffee, aniseed, hints of peach and banana. The result is a complex whisky like no other, created thanks to the singular Ardbeggian alchemy, says Dr. Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks: “There’s a wonderful magic to The Gathering Room, where the parcels merge over time to reach new levels of complexity.”
The new whisky joins as a permanent expression to the Ardbeg Core Range. The anticipation surrounding its release is featured in the Ardbeg An Oa ad campaign, which shows the island’s residents eagerly ascending the cliffs that have sheltered the Distillery for over 200 years to welcome the new creation.
