California electric car start-up Lucid Motors has revealed a new kind of sport-oriented driving, Lucid Air. With production to begin in 2018, the luxury mobility company promises that the Air is aspired to reimagined what a car can be.
Lucid Air makes use of a proprietary drivetrain which is a combination of an electric motor and transmission into one system. The drivetrain was developed in-house, and is smaller, more efficient, and more power-dense than competitors. Lucid Motors has teamed up with Samsung SDI for the Air’s 100 kWh lithium-ion battery. The largest to be featured in a car, the battery moves the car to an impressive range of 400 miles per charge. The Air EV is also powered by twin electric motors that deliver 600 horsepower. When combined, the luxury EV is capable of producing up to 1,000 horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in just 2.5 seconds.
Lucid Air features a narrow front headlight and grille area, and uses an ultra-slim lighting system that’s said to be 50 percent more energy-efficient than the conventional LED headlights of today. Inspired by the eyes of the insects, the system is fitted with thousands of micro-lenses that can adjust the beam for any driving condition.
Due to the absence of actual engine, the Air offers plenty of interior space. The cabin is fitted with jet-style seats that can also recline up to 55 degrees and the 29-speaker audio system with noise cancellation to blast your music while driving or while using safe driving mode. That’s right, Lucid Motors will also equip the Air with autonomous driving technology and active safety systems that reduce the risk for accidents.
The Lucid Motors Air is now available to pre-order. A deposit of $2,500 will allow consumers to own a version of the vehicle that is priced at $100,000 and delivers 300 miles per charge, while a $25,500 deposit will make them the owners of one the 255 models of the Launch Edition that is priced at $160,000.
