Widely considered by the collecting community and cognoscenti as the most valuable and desirable Rolexes ever made by the prestigious manufacturer, it is known as the personal wristwatch of the last emperor of Vietnam, Bảo Đại.

The watch first appeared on the market in 2002, when Phillips sold it for a then record-breaking price, making it the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction.

Born Nguyễn Phúc Vĩnh Thụy, His Majesty Bao Dai was the 13th and last emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty. He ascended the throne in 1925 at age 12 that was granted the title of the Keeper of Greatness. According to family tradition, Bao Dai himself purchased the watch in Geneva in 1954, when he attended the historic Geneva Conference seeking peace in Indochina following the Korean War.
