The ‘Golden Era’ project is a remarkable manifestation of Bugatti’s Sur Mesure offering, an endeavor where the customer’s audacious visions are woven into the fabric of automotive innovation through a harmonious dance with the design team. Unlike any other undertaking, this bespoke endeavor required a level of ingenuity and craftsmanship that goes beyond the ordinary, resulting in a creation that resonates with the very essence of Bugatti.
Achim Anscheidt, the former Bugatti Design Director who spearheaded this exceptional project, recalls, “Our customers can be incredibly creative, and we take great pride in helping them realize their dreams. However, projects of this magnitude are exceedingly rare, and the ‘Golden Era’ is perhaps the most demanding piece of tailored personalization work that my team and I have ever undertaken.”
The visionary behind the ‘Golden Era’ project saw the Chiron Super Sport as a symbol of a watershed moment in the automotive world and sought to pay homage to Bugatti’s storied legacy. With Bugatti’s design team as collaborators, a proposal was developed that beautifully encapsulated the brand’s unique journey through history, celebrating its most iconic and extraordinary creations. The result? The awe-inspiring ‘Golden Era.’
From the very start, this visionary customer’s passion ignited a collaborative process that led to countless visits to the Bugatti team in Molsheim, with the meticulous oversight of Bugatti’s trusted dealer partner in Greenwich, Connecticut. The Sur Mesure approach, which translates to ‘tailored,’ epitomizes Bugatti’s commitment to crafting personalized works of art. This level of dedication and engagement with the customer is a hallmark of Bugatti’s craftsmanship.
The heart of the ‘Golden Era’ project lies in the meticulously hand-drawn sketches that adorn the car’s exterior. A total of 45 sketches depict pivotal moments in Bugatti’s history, with 26 sketches on the passenger side capturing the milestones of Bugatti’s early years, including the opulent Type 41 Royale and the exquisitely designed Type 57 SC Atlantic. The driver’s side tells a modern tale, tracing Bugatti’s revival since 1987 through 19 sketches that encapsulate the brand’s rebirth, with the legendary W16 engine taking center stage.
Creating this breathtaking artwork was a labor of love that demanded exceptional skill and precision. The design team meticulously refined each sketch, ensuring that every stroke of the pencil was perfectly scaled and proportioned. The canvas for this masterpiece is a bespoke shade of gold named ‘Doré,’ elegantly complemented by a gradiented metallic variant of ‘Nocturne Black.’ This bespoke color palette provided the foundation upon which the sketches were hand-drawn, an artistic process that required patience, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity.
Achim Anscheidt explains the artistic endeavor: “We knew that authenticity was paramount, and thus, we chose to use pencils – the very tools we use for sketching on paper. The result is an authentic finish that captures the spirit of Bugatti’s legacy.”
Crafting this symphony of art and engineering was an endeavor marked by both challenges and triumphs. More than 400 hours were dedicated to achieving the perfect finish for the exterior artwork, showcasing the unwavering dedication of Bugatti’s design team. The interior was equally infused with this celebratory spirit, as three Bugatti icons graced each door panel, beautifully juxtaposing past inspirations with present achievements.
