Art is one of the most noble pursuits and in advance of World Art Day on April 15, hotels around the globe that boast cutting-edge modern art exhibits invite guests to experience museum-like stays.
The Principal Madrid Hotel
Housed on a historical 1917 palatial building, The Principal Madrid Hotel is the first five star hotel on the legendary Gran Via. The Singular Santiago is the luxury hotel in Chile’s vibrant capital. The property includes 62 rooms, a restaurant, terrace, spa, gym, and rooftop bar and pool. Within the hotel, guests can find more than 1,000 framed pieces of art including drawings, black and white photos, prints, maps, and more, giving the property an elegant atmosphere. Hotel Lou Pinet
Lou Pinet, a Maisons Pariente property situated in the French Rivera’s legendary town of Saint-Tropez, boasts historic pieces of art by infamous artisans that match manicured gardens, authentic cuisine, and Provençal design. Upon arrival, guests will be able to admire Charlotte Culot’s carpet – a hand-knotted tapestry with bright pigments of orange, yellow, black and red decorating the reception wall. The Charlotte Culot carpet is pat of the Rhizome collection, a collection of work that champion born-digital art and culture, draped with materials of the highest quality, such as wool, ilk, and linen. The Beefbar – Lou Pinet’s trendy restaurant – features the work of Alexandre Benjamin who painted an expansive fresco in homage to Saint-Tropez. The six panels represent views of the city and Lou Pinet adorned with marine and Provençal inspirations, all in warm, bright colors. French ceramist Roger Capron has pieces of furniture and sculptures scattered across the property while ceramist Jean Luçrat has hand-crafted plates with fauvist, cubist, and surrealist influences at the concierge. The gardens of Lou Pinet are adorned by sculptors by Tony Cragg and Ugo Rondinone.
Ellerman House Exclusive Art Gallery
An iconic luxury hotel in Cape Town, Ellerman House, is home to one of South Africa’s most impressive private art collections. It includes work by artists of the twentieth century like Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, Cecil Higgs and Maud Sumner, who were members of the New Group, and are the most famous female pioneer artists in South Africa. Ellerman House also showcases art by contemporary and internationally recognized South African native artists like Helen Sebidi and Senzeni Marasela. Helen Sebidi’s creations were exhibited in private and public collections, including at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington and New York the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, New York, and the World Bank. Senzeni Marasela is a visual artist who works across different media, combining performance, photography, video, prints, textiles and embroidery in mixed-medium installations. Marasela’s work has been presented in South Africa, Europe, the United States, and is part of local and international collections including MoMA.
Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa
Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa blends rich cultural history and contemporary five-star service. The hotel’s eclectic art collection showcases work from South Africa’s emerging artists as well as from those who are long established, including Hilton Edwards, Marcel Greyling, Fiona Rowett and Titia Ballot, amongst many others. Over the years, 200 original art pieces have been sourced from these artists, making the acquisition the largest ever made in South Africa for interior design purposes. The collection includes oil paints, etchings and photo images, as well as others. The newly renovated Nelson Mandela Platinum Suite is decorated with pieces by artist Dean Simon, including a portrait of the former president in the entrance hallway. An eye-catching statue of a bound figure by Dean Simon is positioned in the passageway of the suite. Made entirely from washers, the statue represents Mandela’s incarceration and eventual freedom 27 years later. The hotel can also arrange a tailor-made city art tour for guests who wish to explore the many galleries and showrooms of Johannesburg, featuring stops like the Art Eye Gallery.
