In 1919 in Florence, Count Camillo Negroni got so inspired by his last trip to London with its gin scene, that he requested his favorite Americano cocktail with a touch of gin instead of soda. The bartender wanted to please Count Camillo even more and added an orange garnish rather than the lemon wedge of the Americano. This drink became known as Count Negroni’s Americano, or the “Americano with a touch of gin”. The Negroni is now one of the most famous contemporary classic cocktails that includes the perfectly balanced combination of equal parts of Campari, Red Vermouth and London Dry gin. In 1972 at Bar Basso in Milan, while making the classic Negroni, bartender Mirko Stocchetto accidentally took a bottle of prosecco instead of gin and poured it into the glass. That’s how Negroni Sbagliato was invented (sbagliato, in Italian, means “bungled” or “mistaken”).
Back in October, Negroni Sbagliato has taken over social media, thanks to a behind-the-scenes interview promoting House of the Dragon on HBO’s TikTok account. English nonbinary actor Emma D’Arcy and actress Olivia Cooke – who play Princess Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent respectively – interrogate each other about their drink of choice. D’Arcy, says they prefer a Negroni, before adding “sbagliato with prosecco in it.” Cooke responds “Ooh, stunning.” The interaction went viral across social media channels.
Cinzano – the approachable Italian bubbly also happens to be the official prosecco of the Negroni Sbagliato. It is perfect for pre-dinner drinks paired with a cheese board (notice: we didn’t say butter board), or for clinking glasses when the clock strikes midnight.
To prepare this year’s buzziest cocktail you’ll need:
- 1 part Campari
- 1 part 1757 Vermouth di Torino Rosso
- 1 part Cinzano Prosecco
Combine the Campari and 1757 Vermouth di Torino Rosso in a rocks glass with ice. Stir and top with Prosecco. Garnish with an orange peel.
