Ferrari, the iconic Italian automaker renowned for its powerful and luxurious sports cars, has once again raised the bar with the introduction of its latest special limited series models – the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider. These V8-powered plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are based on the SF90 Stradale and represent the pinnacle of performance and engineering excellence.
The SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider are the culmination of Ferrari’s two decades of experience in developing special versions of its road cars and the XX Programme, which offers exclusive extreme track cars to a select group of expert client drivers. Models such as the 488 Pista and 812 Competizione have set new benchmarks for performance and handling, while the XX Programme has showcased Ferrari’s track technology at its finest, with the FXX-K EVO being the latest addition to the program.
Combining the best of both worlds, Ferrari has created road-legal cars that embody the engineering concepts from both the special versions and the XX Programme. The SF90 XX Stradale takes the exhilarating track experience of the SF90 Stradale to new heights with increased performance. Its impressive 1,030 cv (30 more than the SF90 Stradale) power output, specific software logics, and radical aerodynamic solutions, including a fixed rear spoiler, deliver unparalleled performance and generate an astounding 530 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.
On the other hand, the SF90 XX Spider offers the ultimate on-track adrenaline rush with the added pleasure of open-top driving. Its sophisticated aerodynamic solutions and specially developed cockpit air flows ensure optimal occupant comfort, even with the retractable hard top (RHT) deployed at speeds of up to 45 km/h. The unmistakable sound of the Ferrari V8 engine further enhances the driving experience, making every journey a thrill for the senses.
Both the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain layout, similar to the SF90 Stradale and SF90 Spider. The V8 internal combustion engine is integrated with three electric motors, two on the front axle and one between the engine and gearbox at the rear. This configuration enables a maximum power output of 1,030 cv, setting new performance standards.
The internal combustion engine of the SF90 XX Stradale is a mid-rear-mounted V8 turbocharged unit with 797 cv, further enhancing the performance capabilities of this extraordinary car. Through various enhancements such as improved efficiency, increased compression ratio, and weight reduction, Ferrari has achieved an engine that delivers exceptional power and exhilarating performance.
To complement its powerful engine, the SF90 XX Stradale features a redesigned soundtrack that captures the essence of its racing soul. The hot tube system has been optimized to produce a fuller, richer sound across the entire rev range. Innovative materials and modifications to the intake plenum and resonator contribute to an even more intense and iconic Ferrari V8 sound, creating an acoustic symphony that resonates with automotive enthusiasts.
The electric motors in the SF90 XX Stradale play a crucial role in its exceptional performance. With a combined maximum power output of 233 cv, these motors work in harmony with the internal combustion engine to deliver impressive acceleration and dynamic capabilities. The high-performance lithium-ion battery powers the electric motors, providing a 25 km full-electric range and a maximum speed of 135 km/h when the internal combustion engine is turned off.
The SF90 XX Stradale’s aerodynamic performance is unmatched in Ferrari’s road car history, rivaling that of the LaFerrari supercar. The car delivers double the maximum downforce of the SF90 Stradale, resulting in improved grip and faster lap times. The car’s aerodynamics were enhanced through the redesign of the cooling flow management and engine compartment to handle the increased power.
The rear fixed wing, developed from the XX Programme cars, plays a significant role in the car’s aerodynamics. It interacts with the pressure and backpressure systems around the shut-off Gurney, generating rear downforce and deflecting incoming flow vertically. The car also features redesigned front radiators, side louvres, and front splitter for improved cooling and downforce.
From a vehicle dynamics perspective, the SF90 XX Stradale aims to deliver maximum performance while retaining the functionalities of the SF90 Stradale’s hybrid powertrain. The transition between electric and hybrid modes is smooth, ensuring continuous acceleration. The car incorporates torque vectoring, energy recovery, and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (2.0) for enhanced control. The ABS EVO controller improves braking performance and repeatability.
In terms of styling, the SF90 XX Stradale combines extreme track car design with the pure lines of its predecessor. The rear wing, arrow-shape front wing, and distinctive lower wings contribute to its aerodynamic performance. Carbon-fiber elements highlight the car’s technical aspects. Inside, the focus was on weight savings and a racing-inspired cockpit design.
The SF90 XX Spider features modifications to the rear of the car that combine the traditional flying buttress design with the arrow theme of the front, creating a distinctive and recognizable architecture. This visual effect gives the car a different appearance compared to the SF90 XX Stradale, making it appear lower and sleeker from the side. The roof of the SF90 XX Spider has a wraparound windscreen that seamlessly blends with the side windows, contributing to the lowered center of gravity. The flying buttresses on this model are positioned lower than on the SF90 XX Stradale, enhancing the overall visual effect and maintaining a clean look. The carbon-fiber roll-bars, which protrude when the roof is lowered, do not disrupt the car’s streamlined appearance. When the roof is raised, the roll-bars seamlessly integrate with the roof structure. The carbon-fiber retractable hard top can be opened or closed in just 14 seconds while the car is in motion, up to a speed of 45 km/h, ensuring optimal enjoyment of the vehicle in various weather conditions.
