DMAC Architecture‘s latest hotel project, Graduate Evanston has officially opened. Nestled near the Northwestern University campus and the Lake Michigan shore, the hotel exudes timeless charm and reflects the culture and history of the town. The hotel combines the cozy repose of vintage décor with all the comforts of a modern hotel.
Serving as the architect of record for the 119-key hotel, DMAC worked seamlessly with the Graduate’s in-house design team to maintain the historic integrity of the building. Together, they uncovered original elements from the building, while bringing new life to the property with a fresh perspective on hospitality.
They made significant improvements to the circulation flow, accessibility, and functionality of all of the ground floor spaces, guestrooms, and corridors. At each guestroom level, floor layouts were revised, converting former apartment kitchens into large guestrooms, and upgrading other guestrooms to be ADA accessible. Throughout the entire property, all HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, lighting, and electrical systems were upgraded and modernized as well.
The walls of Graduate Evanston are decorated with custom art. There is an array of Midwestern-inspired lake and landscape portraits, as well as a gallery wall featuring 16 caricatures created by renowned American illustrator and caricaturist Ken Fallin. The portraits portray notable alumni such as Zooey Deschanel, Meghan Markle, and Eddie Vedder.
Centralized around an original burning fireplace, the hotel’s restaurant Trophy Room is inspired by the sophistication of Chicago’s North Shore neighborhoods. A signature Graduate Hotels food and beverage concept serves up classic American dishes with a youthful spin.
