In an exciting collaboration between Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen and Warner Bros. Pictures, the highly anticipated feature film sequel, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” has given birth to a truly extraordinary timepiece – the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month. Inspired by the red and blue glowing prop watches featured in the film, IWC’s latest diver’s watch is limited to only 25 pieces per version.
The Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month is presented in two versions, each housed in an imposing 49-millimeter Ceratanium® case with black dials and black rubber straps. The first version (Ref. IW379405) showcases vibrant red Super-LumiNova® on the dial, hands, and inner rotating bezel, while the second version (Ref. IW379406) boasts a captivating blue glow. The use of Super-LumiNova®, a high-tech ceramic compound, ensures visibility in the dark or underwater, mimicking the luminosity of the movie prop watches.
Ceratanium® – a proprietary material developed by IWC – combines the lightness of titanium with the hardness and scratch resistance of ceramic. The unique process involves machining components from specially forged titanium alloy bars, finishing by hand, and subjecting them to high-temperature kiln firing. The result is a material with properties akin to ceramic and a distinctive color.
The Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month is not just a visual spectacle but also a technical marvel. Powered by the IWC-manufactured 89802 caliber, the watch features a perpetual calendar with digital displays for date and month. This complication automatically adjusts for varying month lengths and leap years, ensuring accurate timekeeping. The chronograph function, displayed in a totalizer at 12 o’clock, adds further functionality.
The movement incorporates a double pawl winding system, allowing efficient energy conversion from the oscillating mass to the mainspring. With a power reserve of 68 hours, this watch is as reliable as it is stylish. The blackened rotor, visible through the transparent sapphire glass case back, adds a touch of technical elegance.
Designed for divers, the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month features IWC’s external/internal rotating bezel system for setting dive time. This system enhances legibility with an inner bezel while maintaining the ease of use of an external rotating bezel. The IWC SafeDive system prevents unintentional changes in dive time, ensuring safety underwater. The watch also incorporates the IWC bracelet quick-change system for easy strap exchanges.
As “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” takes audiences on a journey through a fantastical underwater world, the collaboration with IWC seamlessly merges horology with storytelling. Villains Black Manta and Dr. Stephen Shin, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Randall Park, respectively, don the red and blue glowing prop watches, adding a touch of technical sophistication to their characters.
