Louis Vuitton‘s Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and the renowned architect Frank Gehry elevate perfume to an art form. Les Extraits collection includes five new compositions that are created without top, heart, or base notes, and are instead structured like olfactory columns. Inspired by the desire of sublime and spectacular getaways in time and space, the collection’s perfume bottles were designed by one of the greatest living masters of architecture.
This is the very first time that Frank Gehry has designed a perfume bottle. The lines of the original shape were altered to express the architect’s passion for sailing. Crafted using a sheet of aluminum that has been crumpled like fabric, the hand-polished cap takes the form of an imaginary metal flower and reflects sea and spray, and above all, the absolute movement of life.
Les Extraits Collection reflects the Spirit of Travel that Louis Vuitton has celebrated since its founding. Drawing inspiration from Frank Gehry’s unique aesthetics based on movement and distortion, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud pushes hypersensitivity to the extreme. Five fragrances deconstruct the architecture of fragrance.
I wanted to venture where no one goes anymore. To reinvent the notion of an Extrait in a contemporary way. To bring it light, expand matter, and lighten things up. I wanted to deconstruct the very architecture of perfume. – Jacques Cavallier Belletrud
Dancing Blossom is a composition of May rose petals and Osmanthus, further garnished by the fleshy beauty of Sambac jasmine and Indian tuberose. Osmic Cloud fragrance is caressed by fruity musk, punctuated by chocolatey splinters of Venezuelan Tonka bean. Symphony features the radiant vibration of grapefruit that meets the piquancy of ginger zest, and is combined with orange and bergamot, for endless freshness. Stellar Times includes effervescent freshness of orange blossom that mingles with white amber and the delicious vanilla notes of Peru balsam.
Frank Gehry has also designed a custom fragrance trunk – Flaconnier des Extraits – that celebrates Louis Vuitton’s heritage and trunk-making savoir-faire. Its rounded, supple shape perfectly houses all five bottles in Les Extraits Collection, while the crumpled metal details echo the bottle’s cap.
