Martingale Cognac, the culmination of the Thomas family’s century-old dedication to crafting quality eaux-de-vie, has finally made its debut in the United States. Founded by Guillaume Thomas, a seasoned Pernod Ricard executive, and Amaury Thomas, the Master Blender and Co-Founder, Martingale stands as a testament to the family’s commitment to innovation and excellence.
For generations, the Thomas family silently contributed to the world of Cognac, producing exceptional eaux-de-vie for renowned houses. Now, with Martingale Cognac, the family steps into the spotlight, offering their first commercially available product—Batch 0001 hitting shelves in early October.
The inspiration for Martingale comes from the indomitable spirit of Raymond Thomas, the family patriarch, who envisioned having their own Cognac brand. Guillaume Thomas reflects on his grandfather’s legacy, “Our grandfather always had a vision to one day have our own Cognac brand, and we have been entrusted with this legacy.”
Amaury Thomas, embodying his grandfather’s visionary drive, modernized production and expanded the family-owned vineyards. With over 600 acres spanning the top four crus of the Cognac region, a state-of-the-art distillery, and warehouses ideal for aging, Martingale Cognac ensures complete control of the crafting process.
Martingale Cognac breaks away from tradition, offering a fresh, fragrant, and refined experience tailored for today’s palate. Amaury notes, “Palates change, and that’s just a fact.” The release combines the nuanced flavors of different crus—Grande Champagne for strength, Petite Champagne for balance, Fins Bois for suppleness, and Borderies for delicate floral notes.
Andrew Weir, Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer, compares Martingale to a blend of great whisky and fine wine, promising an experience that will energize the industry and consumers alike.
The liquid, a bright amber with golden reflections, presents elegant notes of spring flowers, acacia, vanilla, almonds, and French madeleine. The well-rounded spirit offers hints of oak and tannins, perfectly balanced with subtle floral and fruity notes, concluding with a soft, lingering finish of elegant sandalwood—a sign of maturity and elegance.
The premium nature of Martingale Cognac is mirrored in its bottle design, inspired by the Chateau d’Ars, the family’s home for three generations. The bottle’s shape and etching draw inspiration from the Chateau’s facade, while the Martingale “M” emblem and green color are pulled from the original stained-glass window.
Guillaume Thomas envisions Martingale Cognac as a bridge between tradition and innovation, catering to consumers who seek high-quality spirits in the gap between VSOP and XO. With a rich heritage, fresh taste, and sophisticated style, Martingale aims to redefine the Cognac category in the US market.
As Martingale Cognac graces select US markets, it invites enthusiasts to partake in a beautiful paradox—a luxury spirit that seamlessly intertwines legacy and modernity. With an SRP of $120 for a 700mL bottle at 40% ABV, the luxury cognac brand invites curious consumers to explore a new era of Cognac appreciation.
