Mercedes-Benz in partnership with Corticeira Amorim, introduced a new surfboard made entirely out of Portuguese cork intended for the Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara to tame the giant waves of Nazaré, one of the most popular seaside resorts in Portugal
Mercedes-Benz Design Group introduced their new surfboard made in partnership with world-class Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara. The Mercedes-Benz MBoard project was launched in 2013 and built up to the production of a series of new boards aptly titled “The Silver Arrow of the Seas”. The surfboard was developed in partnership with Nazaré Qualifica and the Daimler’s design studio, and a joint work from dozens of designers, researchers, aerodynamics and materials development experts as well as the professional surfer Garrett McNamara himself. This resulted in a production of an ideal surfboard capable of enduring and riding the challenging waves at Nazaré Canyon. Their main task was to establish the suitable weight distribution and type of material to come up with another example of the company’s motto: “the best or nothing.”
The production of a new surfboard made entirely out of cork benefited from the support and expertise of Corticeira Amorim, the world’s largest cork producer, which has a long track record of success in the research and development of innovative cork products, some of them developed within Amorim Cork Composites. The selection of this sustainable product was clear to Garrett McNamara, who claims that “the virtues of cork such as its high durability and flexibility make cork surfboards sufficiently strong to withstand the impact of huge waves.”
The second Mersedes-Benz surfboard is made out of a foam material used mainly in the aviation industry. This material allows the surfboard to be constructed without longitudinal reinforcements (stringers). McNamara expects “this board to offer maximum flexibility with no loss of strength, allowing it to withstand the high waves in the northern bay of Nazare”.
Garrett McNamara is the proud holder of the record for the highest wave ever surfed. This guaranteed him a place in the Guinness Book of Records. McNamara surfed the high waves in Nazare using the “MBoards” developed by Mercedes-Benz in 2013. The breathtaking speed of 62.4 km/h was measured thanks to a telemetry system developed by Mercedes-Benz as part of the MBoard project. To give the surfing legend further support, Mercedes-Benz is this year’s official sponsor of the North Canyon project, which was held from October to November 2014 on Nazare’s north beach. International surfing greats took part in the event to ride the world-famous high waves in Nazare.
