Porsche Design has embarked on a journey to revive a legendary timepiece, the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition, after more than four decades. This new chronograph pays homage to the iconic “Military Chronograph” from the 1970s, renowned for its reliability, comfort, and readability, especially among international air and naval forces. The reincarnation of this legend combines cutting-edge technologies and modern materials, blending heritage with innovation.
At the heart of the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition lies the revolutionary material, titanium carbide (TiC). Developed and patented by Porsche Design, TiC sets new standards in robustness and aesthetics. The use of this material makes the chronograph exceptionally scratch-resistant, lightweight, and hypoallergenic, taking a leap beyond its historical predecessor made of steel. This marks the first instance in the brand’s collection where a chronograph is crafted from titanium carbide without a direct association with a specific Porsche sports car, showcasing Porsche Design’s commitment to innovation.
The design of the new edition pays tribute to the 1970s Military Chronograph, featuring a matte black dial that ensures optimal readability. The historic font on the three totalizers further adds a nostalgic touch to the aesthetics. The inclusion of the “Mankei” icon, a screaming marmot, positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock, connects the watch to the newly opened destination for car enthusiasts, the Mankeiwirt by Ferdi Porsche, near Studio F. A. Porsche in Zell am See.
Powered by the Porsche Design WERK 01.240 chronograph caliber with COSC certification and flyback function, the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition upholds the legacy of its forerunner in terms of precision and functionality. The flyback function allows quick and seamless operations, making it an ideal timekeeper for outdoor, winter sports, and racing activities.
Several symbolic details pay homage to the historical forerunner, such as the placement of the “TiC” logo and the reinterpretation of the iconic 3H symbol. While the original symbol signified the use of tritium for enhanced readability, the new edition utilizes Super-LumiNova® material for optimal visibility in the dark.
The Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition features the “Mankei” icon and “Chronograph 1 Utility Edition” lettering laser-engraved on the black-coated case back, along with the individual limitation number (XXX/250). This limited edition timepiece is not just a watch; it’s a piece of history and exclusivity.
Designed for outdoor activities, the edition comes with a slate-gray calfskin strap, reminiscent of the interiors of Porsche sports cars, and a quick-change mechanism. An additional white textile strap with coordinates of the F.A.T. Ice Race in Zell am See provides a sporty alternative, making it an ideal companion for winter sports and racing enthusiasts.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition is available for pre-order starting October 9, 2023, at porsche-design.com, and will be in Porsche Design Stores worldwide and selected watch retailers from January 15, 2024, at a retail price of 11,950 euros (RRP).
