Porsche, the iconic sports car manufacturer, is celebrating its 75th anniversary by unveiling its latest concept car. Although not available for sale, the Mission X offers a captivating vision of what the sports car of the future could potentially look like. With its compact size, cutting-edge design, and remarkable performance, the Mission X represents the pinnacle of luxury and innovation in the automotive industry.
The Mission X concept study is a relatively compact hypercar, measuring approximately 177 inches long and 78.7 inches wide. It features a wheelbase of 107.4 inches, reminiscent of the dimensions found in the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder models. The aerodynamic design incorporates staggered tires, with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear, further enhancing its performance capabilities.
The Mission X challenges the notion that hypercars must have an aggressive appearance. Its low-slung body, standing at less than 47.2 inches tall, boasts a stunning Rocket Metallic finish specially designed for this concept study. Carbon fiber design elements below the beltline add a touch of sophistication with their satin finish, showcasing the material’s unique structure. The rear wheels of the Mission X feature transparent aero blades, resembling turbines that aid in brake cooling.
The concept study embraces innovation with its lightweight glass dome, supported by a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) exoskeleton, providing a unique visual aesthetic. The iconic Le Mans-style doors, opening forward and upward, pay homage to the legendary Porsche 917 racing car. The headlights of the Mission X draw inspiration from historic racing cars, such as the Porsche 906 and 908, with a vertical base form and a high-tech support structure framing the LED light modules. The rear of the vehicle features a full-length light unit, giving the impression of floating, with illuminated Porsche lettering and a captivating rear light design.
Introducing a modernized Porsche crest, the Mission X showcases a brushed precious metal finish, a three-dimensional honeycomb structure, and subtle gold accents. The asymmetrical interior design reflects a driver-focused approach, with the driver’s seat and center console adorned in Kalahari Grey, while the contrasting Andalusia Brown shade embellishes the passenger seat. The cabin incorporates CFRP seat shells, six-point seatbelts integrated into the monocoque, and an open-top steering wheel equipped with mode switches and shift paddles. Multiple cameras are also integrated into the vehicle, allowing drivers to record their journeys.
Porsche’s commitment to e-performance and sustainable mobility shines through in the Mission X concept study. If it were to enter series production, the Mission X aims to become the fastest road-legal vehicle on the Nürburgring Nordschleife track, with a power-to-weight ratio of approximately one horsepower per 2.2 pounds. It is expected to generate exceptional downforce values, surpassing the current 911 GT3 RS. The Mission X also offers improved charging performance with its 900-volt system architecture, enabling it to charge roughly twice as quickly as the Taycan Turbo S, Porsche’s current flagship electric vehicle. The centrally installed battery, following an ‘e-core layout,’ optimizes the car’s agility by centering the mass.
