As the Lunar New Year approaches on February 10, 2024, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has outdone itself with the unveiling of four extraordinary ‘Year of the Dragon’ Bespoke commissions. Crafted at the iconic Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, these exclusive creations transcend cultural boundaries, celebrating the essence of Chinese culture through meticulous artistry and design. The result is a harmonious blend of luxury, tradition, and innovation that pays homage to the powerful symbolism of the dragon.
The inspiration for these unique commissions stems from the dragon, a universal symbol of power, success, and prosperity in Chinese culture. The Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective embarked on a journey to create a modern, minimalistic expression of the dragon that has never been witnessed in a Rolls-Royce before.
The ‘Year of the Dragon’ Bespoke commissions showcase intricate fascia panels adorned with contemporary dragon artworks, individually hand-painted by a dedicated Rolls-Royce artist. The use of multiple hues of red, meticulously applied in four stages, creates a realistic 3D effect, as if the dragon were suspended in a dance of flames, reflecting the celebratory nature of the Lunar New Year.
The dragon motif extends seamlessly into the interior of each motor car, with Phoenix Red stitching elegantly depicting the mythical creature on the headrests of all four seats. The craftsmanship involved in this process is awe-inspiring, with each embroidery comprising 5,449 stitches and taking around 20 hours to complete.
The rear Piano Black picnic tables in three of the commissions feature a minimalist representation of the Chinese zodiac calendar, intricately inlaid in stainless steel. The Bespoke Starlight Headliner, a dramatic expression of the mythical creature, boasts 677 individually placed fiber-optic ‘stars’ forming an abstract dragon motif, a result of three months of meticulous design and development.
Each Phantom Extended commission is complemented by a Gallery artwork crafted from carbon fiber, protected behind pure glass and running seamlessly across the fascia. The interior is further enhanced with Bespoke lambswool carpets, color-matched to the leather trim, creating a cohesive and luxurious atmosphere.
The Bespoke designers have meticulously crafted unique colorways for each model, such as a duotone Cherry Red with Crystal finish for the Cullinan and two-tone Silver and Cherry Red or monolithic Black with a Crystal finish for the Phantom Extended motor cars.
Attention to detail is evident in every element of these commissions, from the hand-painted Phoenix Red coachline subtly incorporating the dragon motif to the Bespoke coachline that symbolically represents the East – the direction of the rising sun.
