Since its inception in 2001, Samuel Adams Utopias has held a prestigious position in the world of craft beer, captivating enthusiasts with its enigmatic allure. The latest addition to this iconic series, Utopias 2023, upholds the legacy of surprising beer lovers worldwide.
Every two years, Utopias is crafted by blending multiple batches of Samuel Adams’ earlier Extreme Beers, which undergo further aging in a diverse array of barrels. This year, the brewing team expanded their horizons, incorporating American bourbon, imported Scotch, and peated whisky barrels, as well as casks from Portugal’s Ruby Port and Carcavelos, and France’s Cognac. Adding a unique twist, Utopias 2023 introduces barrels from Pineau des Charentes, a rare fortified French aperitif wine.
The European roots of Utopias 2023 are blended seamlessly with American innovation. Celebrating 39 years of Samuel Adams’ growth, the brewing process involves collaboration across four states. Teams from Boston Beer’s facilities in Cincinnati, Pennsylvania, and Boston come together to create this masterpiece, which is then finalized at Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware.
The journey of Utopias 2023 reflects the dedication and collaboration of Boston Beer coworkers. Brewed and fermented in Cincinnati, aged in Pennsylvania, sampled and blended in Boston, and finally bottled in Delaware, this extreme barrel-aged beer is a true labor of love.
The packaging itself is a work of art, with ceramic bottles resembling classic copper brew kettles, crafted by Brazilian artisans. Each bottle encapsulates the essence of “Together We Are Heavy,” the motto that symbolizes the unity and strength of the Boston Beer teams.
To fully savor the complexity of Utopias 2023, it is recommended to serve it in a two-ounce portion at room temperature in a snifter, allowing the aromas to unfold. With a suggested retail price of $240 per 24.5-ounce bottle, this limited-edition release is available at select specialty beer and liquor stores starting October 30th.
However, due to its robust 28% ABV, Utopias 2023 is subject to legal restrictions in certain states. Unfortunately, residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia won’t be able to indulge in this extraordinary brew.
