Scheduled to make its premiere during the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the gorgeous Ferrari 488 Spider is officially revealed
Ferrari
The most powerful convertible Ferrari 488 Spider is introduced ahead of its 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show debut. The luxury vehicle is “the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever built”. A small glass rear window operates independently of the top and can be lowered to three separate positions to either let more exhaust sound in with the top up or, more usefully, to act as a wind blocker with the top down.
Ferrari 488 Spider has a spaceframe chassis made of 11 different aluminium alloys combined with magnesium. This provides torsional rigidity and beam stiffness with first class chassis performance. The engine, a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8, is the same unit found in the 488 GTB and here its output is unchanged at 660 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. Coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 488 Spider can accelerate to 100 kmph from standstill in 3.0-seconds and go on to a top speed of 327 kmph.
The patented roof folding system is one of the remarkable features of new Ferrari 488 Spider. The roof folds backwards in two overlapping sections to rest flush on the engine in a very compact solution. It takes just 14 seconds to go up or down. Inside, the design is the same as what can be found on the 488 GTB. Ferrari’s signature multifunction steering, driver focussed controls, analogue-digital combination dials, passenger information display, bucket seats, etc., are available on the 488 Spider.
Ferrari 488 Spider is equipped with 20-inch wheels all round wrapped in a staggered setup of 245/35 tyres up front and 305/30 tyres at the rear. Curb weight is recorded at 1,525 kg with options loaded in while boot space is more than respectable at 230 litres.
While more details about the 488 Spider are yet to be released closer to the unveiling on September, 15 2015, it is expected that the car will cost around $300,000.
