The Lexus Hoverboard
Lexus has made dreams come true and making history. The Lexus Hoverboard represents true innovation and imagination, together pushing the boundaries of technology even further.
You can see steam rising from the board — that’s liquid nitrogen keeping the superconductors and magnets from overheating. “It’s an art of material science,” Ludwig Schultz explains in the making-of video.
The Lexus hoverboard uses magnetic levitation to achieve amazing frictionless movement. In combination with liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, the company brings us closer to “Back to the Future”. In a specially built skate park, these permanent magnets are laid out like a track and are hidden under the wood and concrete surface of the park’s ramps and other surfaces, according to El Patín. This hidden track creates the illusion that the hoverboard is moving freely around the skate park, just like a regular skateboard. But really, the board can only move over the magnetic track. The board features the iconic Lexus spindle grille signature shape and uses high tech materials and natural bamboo.
Professional skateboarder Ross McGouran had to start over again as a beginner, learning to move without the help of any friction underneath. Science fiction turned into reality during the three days Lexus filmed the Slide mini-movie series.
