The Macallan has unveiled the final expression in The Macallan Concept Series. Following the release of Concept No. 2 that brings together music and whisky, Concept No. 3 connects the worlds of whisky and the visual arts.
Concept No. 3 is the collaboration with visionary graphic designer David Carson whose works have been exhibited in dedicated shows across the world. The recipient of the AIGA, which is considered to be the design profession’s highest accolade, David has created campaigns for some of the world’s leading consumer brands including Nike, Levi, Pepsi and Ray Ban and he was among only two graphic designers selected by Apple as part of its iconic ’30 most innovative users’ list.
To bring his unique view to the design of Concept No. 3, David Carson visited The Macallan’s 485-acre Estate in Scotland’s Speyside where he spent time with The Macallan Whisky Maker Polly Logan.
The designer created unique, handmade collage designs for Concept No. 3 that celebrate the outlook and methodology he shares with The Macallan. Many of the colors used are also those found at The Macallan Estate on Scotland’s Speyside, with blue symbolizing the magical River Spey and red reflecting The Macallan’s exceptional sherry-seasoned oak casks.
When crafting Concept No. 3, Polly Logan drew inspiration from David’s character and career. The result is an unusually fresh whisky, with a distinctively warm, golden color that pays tribute to the graphic designer’s years on the USA’s West Coast. The ABV was developed specifically to be 40.8%, after the pair realized that eight is their favorite number.
The Macallan Concept Series’ final release has been crafted to deliver complexity from predominantly first fill sherry seasoned American oak casks that deliver sweetness and spice, intensified by a selection of European oak casks to add depth and richness. Balance and freshness are achieved by specially selected refill and virgin oak casks.
A presentation box is decorated with David Carson’s unique designs and each bottle also features labeling created by the designer along with a chevron symbol bearing his signature. This release will be available from July 2021 at The Macallan Boutiques in selected international airports and China Hainan Island duty-free shops, before being introduced more widely to global travel retail hubs from August 2021.
