The Town of Darien has reached the final agreement to purchase Great Island in Connecticut – one of the largest remaining undeveloped pieces of land in the area. The closing date is set for May 5, 2023. Jennifer Leahy of Douglas Elliman brought on the listing in 2022 (after years on the market with various brokerages) and secured a contract by May 2022. It last asked $100 million and the initial $103 million agreement was corrected to an amended purchase price of $85 million.
Great Island is a private 60-acre island accessible via causeway with over a mile of shoreline on the Long Island Sound. The parcel of land was originally bought by the Ziegler family in 1880’s, but most recently it has been controlled by the Steinkraus branch of the family. When asked about finalizing the deal, the Steinkraus family says, “Our family has cherished Great Island for over 120 years. It is a magical place and we are saddened to see it go, however, we are also excited to pass the torch to the town. We are confident they will be top-notch stewards of the land and preserve it for all to enjoy.”
It’s an honor and a privilege to represent this historical transaction. I’m thrilled for my clients and the present and future citizens of the Town of Darien. – Jennifer Leahy
Located just 50 miles outside Manhattan, Great Island is the largest private island ever to be offered for sale on the East Coast. The property features a 1905 13,000 square feet manor, 19th century Farmhouse, Seaside Bungalow and a Beach Cottage that are positioned next to a white sandy beach.
There is a rare deep-water dock that can accommodate a 100-foot yacht, as well as a world-class equestrian facility designed by renowned architect Rafael Guastavino. It was home base to five-time Olympic show jumper and gold medalist William Steinkraus. The property includes the beautiful 18-stall granite stable and indoor heated riding arena. Just outside and overlooking the harbor, there is an outdoor sand dressage ring and a large, half-size polo field as well as the numerous paddocks and riding trails.
