Luxury smartphone manufacturer Vertu offers a new limited edition Aster Yosegi Wood smartphone that incorporates traditional Japanese art with the brand’s material innovation and contemporary design
Luxury phone brand Vertu demonstrates how to utilize innovative and high-performance materials with a new limited edition smartphone called Aster Yosegi Wood. The new smartphone combines traditional Japanese art with British craftsmanship. As a result, the beautifully woven pattern deriving from bamboo weaves and fishnets, garnishes a 4.7-inch, high contrast display at 473dpi, protected by sapphire crystal, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz Quad-core processor, 13 MP main camera, Hasselblad certified imaging , 64GB of internal memory and 2275mAh Li-ion battery.
The idea to use wood for a special edition is kind of a natural progression to me: it is a luxury material, it is a natural growing resource, you can create beautiful patterns and designs with it… and it also fulfills all of our technical needs, it is light, non-conductive, strong and durable. – Hutch Hutchinson, Vertu Head of Design
Priced from $10,892, Vertu Aster Yosegi Wood is limited to only 50 pieces. What makes the new luxury smartphone standing out is the gorgeous 200 year old Japanese art of Yosegi-zaiku, a form of traditional oriental marquetry which appeared during Japan’s culturally rich Edo Period. Vertu has a joined forces with Yamaha Corporation to create the amazing Yosegi pattern.
Basswood strips dyed in different colors are laminated together to form an oblong rod. The timber rods are glued together to create a block which contains a complex geometric pattern. The section surface of this pattern is chopped into thin veneers displaying the sublime Ichimatsu-Ajiro checkerboard detailing. The veneer is then delicately wrapped around the phone and treated with up to 6 layers of hand applied lacquer with repeated sanding and polishing to create a superb and protective gloss finish. Aster Yosegi Wood comes with a beige and black calf leather case.
